WHICH DANCE SHOULD YOU LEARN?

Country Swing and Two Step are two of the most common country partner dances, but they feel and function very differently.

Country Swing is compact, flexible, and easy to adapt. Two Step travels around the dance floor and depends more heavily on rhythm, timing, and floor awareness.

Both are valuable. The right choice depends on where you plan to dance and what kind of experience you want.

Country Swing

Country Swing is one of the most practical social dances you can learn. It uses a simple foundation that allows dancers to improvise, adapt to different partners, and move comfortably in limited space.

Because it works in crowded bars, at weddings, in small venues, and on open dance floors, it is especially useful for social dancers. It can also be danced to a wide range of music, which makes it easy to use in many different settings.

Country Swing is practiced throughout Nashville and across North America, so learning it gives you a dance you can take almost anywhere.

Two Step

Two Step is a traditional traveling dance that moves around the outside of the floor. It relies on a clear rhythmic pattern and works best when there is enough space for couples to travel continuously.

It is closely tied to traditional country music and remains a major part of honky-tonk and dance-hall culture. Compared with Country Swing, it usually takes more time to become comfortable with timing, navigation, and maintaining a smooth connection while moving through traffic.

Recommendation

Choose Country Swing if you want a practical dance that you can use in crowded venues, at weddings, and in social settings across Nashville and beyond.

Choose Two Step if you enjoy traditional country music, want to travel around the dance floor, and plan to dance on organized dance floors dedicated to progressive dances.

Many students eventually learn both, but Country Swing is usually the most versatile place to begin.

fun fact!

Country dance appears throughout Nashville’s music and entertainment culture, but the name of a dance is not always a reliable guide to what you are seeing. In Ella Langley's hit song "Choosing Texas" she repeatedly sings, "He's two steppin' 'round the room". Ironically, the dance in the music video is actually Country Swing being performed by one of our own students. You can also see our instructor Nicole doing Country Swing in the music video for Luke Bryan's song, "But I Got A Beer In My Hand."
