Country Swing Versus Two Step: Which Should You Choose?

Country Swing and Two Step are classic partner dances performed at nearly every country bar across the country. With our incredible lessons, you'll be ready to hit the dance floor that same night.

While some folks refer to all country partner dancing as "Two Step" or "Texas Two Step", there are generally two significantly different styles of non-choregraphed country partner dancing - Country Swing and Two Step. Each requires a different amount of space and level of skill.

FUN FACTS: In Ella Langley's hit song "Choosing Texas" she repeatedly sings..."he's two steppin' 'round the room". Ironically, in the music video, one of our own students can be seen throughout the video doing Country Swing. You can also see one of our instructors Nicole and a different student of ours doing Country Swing in Luke Bryan's video for the song, "But I Got A Beer In My Hand."

Country Swing is one of the most fun and approachable partner dances you’ll ever learn. It requires a small amount of space so it's great for dancing in your kitchen, at small bars and restaurants, and at weddings. Country Swing is essentially the fun parts of the other partner dances with an easy basic step to connect them. As a spectator, Country Swing is much more entertaining to watch with opportunities for spins, dips and flashy moves. You don't need rhythm to perform Country Swing which makes it great for beginner dancers and it can be performed to ANY genre of music, not just country.

Two Step is a classic country partner dance and generally requires a decent amount of space. The dance travels around the outside of the dance floor like a race track or skating rink. You CAN two step in a small area but that isn't the norm. As opposed to Country Swing, Two Step requires rhythm, and a higher degree of skill than Country Swing. It also requires a specific beat that isn't found in much of today's country music. These factors should be kept in mind when choosing which dance to learn.

If you are planning to partner dance while visiting Nashville, or you want a dance you can use anywhere, including your kitchen, we recommend Country Swing. If you're up for the challenge and want to learn two step, we can get you two stepping around the dance floor tonight.
